Bridges on The Heath


Bridges have played an important part in the historical development of Hampstead Heath and not just in the structural sense!

Perhaps the most significant bridge is The Viaduct Bridge which could have altered the whole of The Heath's unique environment if Thomas Maryon Wilson had had his way and he'd been allowed to build his East Park Estate. Thomas also constructed the smaller Bird Bridge footbridge nearby. (see slides below)

Other bridges were  built to fascilitate the crossing of Heath waters and/or as ornate additions to sculptured landscape, such as the Kenwood Stone Bridge or The Sham Bridge or The Rustic Bridge at Golders Hill.
