George Romney's House ~
The first artist to move to Hampstead permanently was the portrait painter George Romney (1734-1802) who built a house and studio on Holly Bush Hill in 1796.
The move was not a success because Romney had no interest in landscapes and had moved too far from London to maintain his city-based portrait clients.
The House is on Hollybush Hill (formerly Cloth Hill).
Romney lived at No. 6, just behind the current HollyBush public house.
