Hampstead Paintings (A-C)

paintings of Hampstead through the ages

The most significant changes were those of the Hampstead town improvements designed to modernise the roads and to clear some of the dilapidated slum properties between Little Church Row (now the lower part of Heath Street) and Hampstead High Street.

In 1893, The Metropolitan Board of Works obtained powers to construct a new street from Church Row up to Hampstead High Street at its junction with Heath Street.

This linked Fitzjohn’s Avenue with the original part of Heath Street and became part of it and the whole street was renumbered.

Part of Hampstead High Street was widened and the properties between the two streets demolished and rebuilt.
