It covers 70 acres and is composed mainly of oak, hornbeam and holly wood but there is a variety of other shrub and tree species, which have seeded there.

It is an Ancient Wood and prehistoric flints have been found there.
It has been established that a Romano-Briton settlement existed on the higher ground in the north of The Wood.
An ancient ditch/enclosure runs across it that is thought to be either an enclosure for the deer owned by the Medieval Bishop of London or possibly just a prehistoric defensive work.
There are a variety of plants, including the quite rare golden rod (Solidago virgaurea) and "drooping sedge".
Butterflies and moths include speckled wood (Pararge aegeria) and bird records include the Golden Oriole (Oriolus oriolus), Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca), Barn Owl (Tyto alba) and Long-eared Owl (Asio otus).
Four species of bats have been found in Highgate Wood: The Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus), Natterer's (Myotis nattereri), Leisler's (Nyctalus leisleri) and the Noctule (Nyctalus noctula).
There are a vast amount of activities that take place in Highgate Wood, including walks and school visits.
There is a large sports field for football and cricket.
You can enjoy the pleasant Lodge Cafe, which has a small "disabled drivers" car park and toilets.
