The Hampstead Heath Hockey Club used this clearing at one time, though they now play on The Heath Extension.
The field is generally known as Dr. Joad's Hockey Pitch. Dr. C.E.M. Joad (1891-1953) was known as a knowledgeable intellectual on the popular BBC radio programme: "The Brain's Trust". He moved to East Heath Road in 1921. He is buried at St.John-At-Hampstead.
The author has found a piece of film footage showing Dr. Joad playing hockey on the Heath field, (1944-1945) Click on the link below! There is a 30-second advert and an introduction of Dr. Joad in his study and then the shots of him on The Hockey Field!
The "Demesne" boundary crosses the upper area of the field although, of course, it is not now visible. A Demesne boundary separated the Norman Lord of The Manor's personal estate from that which he allowed peasants to farm.
