POND SQUARE ~
Just beyond South Grove, the annual Fair is held here and the area is very much a local village green in essence.
There were two ponds, originally, but these were filled in around 1864.
Surrounding Pond Square are many examples of eighteenth century houses, as well as older and more modern examples.
The Square is protected from commercial exploitation by an Act of Parliament.
Examples of interesting architecture are Rock House (built about 1770) and The Lawns, redesigned and receiving awards from the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2001 and the Civic Trust in 2002.
