Public Houses INTRODUCTION

THE ALE HOUSES OF HAMPSTEAD

Like so many British towns and villages, Hampstead is not short of interesting drinking houses both now and in its fascinating past.
In all cases, the names mostly derive from historical or native origins.

The Flask derives its name from vessels used in transporting water from The Hampstead Springs, The William IV after the King's ride towards Kenwood, in 1835.

Many of Hampstead's pubs have existed for hundreds of years but, as in so many towns and cities, local economical difficulties have led to the closure of a substantial amount and wonderful historical milestones have been lost for ever, such as The Hare & Hounds in North End, Jack Straw's Castle in North End Way and The Vale Of Health Hotel to name but a few.

Enjoy these pages as you discover a fascinating glimpse into some of Hampstead's interesting inns and taverns!

Below is a table of these historical public houses. Those in RED are either demolished or closed now.
