WOOD POND ~
Situated at the lower part of the Kenwood Pasture Land.
It is a favourite breeding area for Canadian and Egyptian Geese, Coots, Tufted and Mandarin Ducks
(see the City-Of_London Map to establish its exact whereabouts)
The Wood Pond was once known as The Lily Pond and is probably an earlier enlargement of four medieval fish ponds.
It is fed by the upper reaches of the river Fleet.
It was probably made by an old process of "puddling", where clay was possibly brought up from the Highgate Ponds and trampled in.
Sheep and cattle were often used to trample the clay into an impervious layer.
